Alexandre PANAU :
When ambition meets passion
Portraits
Alexandre Panau, a student in SUP 4 at ISEG Bordeaux is delighted to have found an interesting Internship for this summer. A perfect example of when ambition meets passion................ISEG Bordeaux : Where will you be undertaking your internship?
Alexandre Panau : I have just found an internship for this summer in Paris at Beez Entertainment, one of the leading European editors and distributor of Japanese animation (series and movies). The company is a subsidiary of Bandai Visual. The internship starts on the 21st of April and will last 5 months, till the beginning of the 5th year of the SUP program at the ISEG Paris.
I am delighed with the opportinity to work there, as the people that received me in the job interview last month seem very professional, motivated and friendly. As far as the job is concerned, I will help both the marketing/production manager and the communication/RP manager in their daily tasks: participating in events, press and other media relations, dealing with the internet sites of the company, working on the French/English (maybe German) localisation of the products, and other activities related to the commercialisation and edition of the DVDs and distribution to the TV channels in Europe.
ISEG Bordeaux : How did you find this opportunity at Beez Entertainment ?A.P.: First, I would like to say that I am currently undertaking a very interesting work experience at bébé 9 in Bordeaux. But I have realised that even though the relationship with my colleagues and my boss as well as the work I am doing as an Internet assistant is fulfilling, I recently understood that I am the kind of person that can only really be happy professionally if I have a real passion for my work. I think I can be much more motivated and efficient when dealing with sectors that really interest me.
So I fixed an objective of finding an internship in the field of Japanese animation since it is one of my main hobbies and passions, and I know the sector pretty well. I sent several spontaneous letters of application and CVs to different companies on the market both in France and abroad (in the UK and USA), and I even thought about sending some to Japanese companies.
The very
next day after sending the letters the marketing director of Beez
Entertainment -which was my main target because I feel comfortable with
their products and because I knew they actually had good job offers on
their website- phoned me and offered me an interview at their office in
Paris. After my interview in Paris two weeks later, I was really
doubtful about whether or not I captured their attention because I
found it quite difficult and to be honest I was rather stressed, but I
quickly received an offer, which is great.ISEG Bordeaux : What is the link between your "stage" and your "Mémoire" ?
A.P.: I am required to prepare both a professional and a themed research memoire for my 4th year at ISEG Business School. My original choice of subject was quite broad and looked at the cultural differences of the audiovisual markets in the world, focusing on France, the USA, Japan and India. But after my interview with Beez's managers, I understood that I was not the only one trying to analyse the current success of Japanese animation as well as the problems involved in this sector. They even clearly said to me that they had no solution for the moment and that there were important unsolved issues within this industry all over the world.
That is why I decided to change my subject and I am nowing concentrating the memoire on this new theme with guidance from the company which I hope, will be of interest to the professionals of the sector (especially Beez) I aim to ensure a better understanding of this art which is also a potentially big market in the Western countries, and if I can be helpful to the company that will employ me this summer, that is even better.
ISEG Bordeaux : What are you hoping to get out of this experience?
A.P.: I actually have high hopes for this internship. First, I would like to work well in this company and if possible try to continue working with Beez next year 4 days a week because we are allowed to work from Monday to Thursday in 5th year at the ISEG as everyone knows.
Then, I hope I will learn a lot of things concerning the market of Japanese animation and about the distribution of these products here in Europe. I hope I will develop my skills in marketing and communication too because I learned the theory at the ISEG well, and I now have to put it into practice in the professional world.
And the fact that I will have to work in an international environment will be a further source of motivation I think. In fact, the main manager of Beez is a Japanese man: Fukuda Keibun-san ( I used to enjoy reading his articles when he was a journalist at AnimeLand, the biggest magazine related to animation in Europe), and the company itself obviously has strong links with the Japanese headquarters of Bandai Visual and Japanese studios.
So, I'm feeling pretty confident right now about this internship because I will do my best to fulfil everyone's expectations and I hope I will have fun too!
ISEG Bordeaux : Do you speak Japanese?
A.P.: Yes, I speak a little Japanese; let's say that I have a level between beginner and intermediate. It means that I can understand quite well spoken conversations in Japanese and that I can speak a bit the language. I can handle simple hiraganas and katakanas (simple Japanese words) but I have a hard time however when it comes to writing difficult sentences using Kanjis (words taken from the Chinese).
I first learned Japanese when I was a student in Japanese culture at the University of Bordeaux III some years ago, but I quit after just one year because it was a little difficult for someone like me that didn't learn Japanese before the University (a lot of high schools in Bordeaux provide lessons of Japanese now) and I didn't think I could have a good job after the graduation anyway, so I started to search for a business school and that's how I found the ISEG Bordeaux. And I'm pleased with the choice I made two years ago.
どうむ ありがとう ございます HAVE A NICE DAY !!!!!!!!!!!!!
